President Obama Confirms bin Laden is Dead

President Barack Obama confirmed Sunday that Osama bin Laden has been killed by American forces in Pakistan.

Obama said bin Laden was hiding in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The president ordered the launch of the mission and after a firefight, bin Laden was shot and killed. His body was taken into American custody. There were no American casualties.

Obama said he received a lead last August that bin Laden could possibly be hiding in Pakistan. Last week, he authorized an operation to get bin Laden out.

The president clearly said this war is not, and never has been against Islam. The war is against terrorism and al-Qaida, a terrorist group headed by bin Laden. They declared war on the United States on 9/11 and we retaliated.

President Obama said bin Laden has been the symbol of al-Qaida, and that his death has been the most significant achievement in the war on terror to date. However, he cautioned Americans that al-Qaida will continue to pursue and attack the United States. He reminded Americans to be vigilant at home and abroad.

Obama said Pakistan officials have cooperated with the United States during this process. The president said bin Laden had made threats against Pakistan as well. He spoke with President Zardari, who agreed, along with his team, that this is a good and historic day for both countries.

The president reminded Americans that the United States did not choose this war. He acknowledged that the United States knows the costs of war but assured Americans that he will not tolerate the security of the country to be threatened.

Obama referenced the incredible loss many Americans have faced in the wake of 9/11. He spoke about the unity America felt after the attacks and said the United States can do anything it sets its mind to do.

The president thanked the intelligence and counterterrosism professionals who worked on this mission, as wells as the men who physically carried out the mission on the ground.
